Latvia enters the Group A clash with Austria as the clear favorite due to deeper roster talent and stronger recent international pedigree, even as both sides compete in the 2026 IIHF World Championship preliminary round. Latvian skaters bring greater depth from professional leagues abroad and consistent qualification experience, giving them an edge in puck possession and special-teams execution against Austria’s thinner lineup. Austria’s recent 5-2 win over Britain shows improved scoring punch, yet the team still lacks the elite forward depth and goaltending consistency Latvia has displayed in prior tournaments. Traders price the matchup at roughly 68 percent for Latvia largely because historical head-to-head results and current form favor the Baltic side in a neutral-site game where rest and travel factors remain even.
