Heavy Labour losses in the May local elections triggered Keir Starmer’s resignation and Andy Burnham’s July leadership win, shifting focus to whether the new prime minister will seek a fresh mandate amid Reform UK’s sustained polling lead. Traders weigh early dissolution risks against the incentive to stabilize governance, with recent by-elections and ongoing economic pressures providing near-term catalysts that could accelerate or delay a call. Historical precedent favors elections in the fourth or fifth year of a parliament, though current volatility raises the chance of an earlier contest if opposition momentum builds.
