President Trump launched Project Freedom in early May 2026 as a U.S. naval escort operation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz following Iranian attacks and mining during the 2026 Iran conflict. The initiative began on May 4 but was paused within 48 hours after Saudi Arabia denied use of its airspace and Prince Sultan airbase, citing escalation risks, while Pakistan and other partners raised similar concerns during ongoing diplomatic talks. Trump framed the pause as tied to progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations for a broader peace agreement, though reporting indicated limited evidence of an imminent deal. The Strait remains under U.S. naval presence with restrictions in place. Traders are monitoring any White House statements on resumed escorts, shifts in Saudi or regional cooperation, or formal outcomes from current Iran talks as potential catalysts for restarting the operation.
