South Korea's equity market, tracked by the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY), has advanced sharply in 2026 on the back of surging demand for memory chips that power artificial intelligence infrastructure. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together dominate the Kospi weighting, have reported record earnings growth tied to high-bandwidth memory shortages and elevated pricing, lifting the ETF's year-to-date return above 95 percent and pushing share prices to fresh highs near 194 before a sharp pullback in mid-May. Traders are weighing sustained semiconductor tailwinds and improving corporate governance reforms against recent record ETF outflows and broader market volatility, with key upcoming catalysts including further memory pricing data and Bank of Korea policy signals that could shape near-term share price momentum.
