Recent CPI readings climbing to 4.45% in July 2026 and 4.38% in June, after sixteen months below the RBI’s 4% target, combined with the central bank’s August 2026 revision lowering its FY2026-27 headline inflation forecast only modestly to 5.0%, underpin the 79.5% market-implied probability for an annual average above 4.5%. Supply-side pressures from food and fuel, Middle East-related energy costs, and a weaker rupee have driven the uptick while core inflation (ex-food and fuel) stays contained near 3.9% and core ex-precious metals near 2.3-2.5%. The RBI’s decision to hold the repo rate at 5.25% and project a Q3 FY27 peak before easing reinforces trader views that the 2026 average will settle in the upper part of the 4-5% range, with monsoon performance and global commodity trends as key near-term swing factors.
