This follows rapid Gemini 3 iterations—3 Pro in November 2025, 3.1 Flash and Pro in early 2026—aimed at closing the competitive gap with OpenAI's GPT-5 and Anthropic's Claude Opus in reasoning and agentic tasks. Google I/O on May 19-20 looms as the pivotal catalyst for an announcement or preview, though uncertainties persist around exact naming, safety testing delays, and public availability criteria beyond developer previews.
