Recent National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) seasonal outlooks and MetService forecasts indicate near-average to slightly below-average winter temperatures for Wellington in mid-August 2026, with official model runs projecting a daily maximum near 9–10°C amid persistent southerly airflow and cloud cover limiting solar heating. These conditions align closely with climatological norms for the region, where August highs typically range 11–13°C but frequently dip under polar air intrusions, producing the strong trader consensus at 10°C. Measurement relies on verified station data from official networks, with resolution hinging on the recorded peak. An abrupt northerly wind shift or clearer skies could allow brief warming above this threshold, though current model consensus shows low probability of significant deviation before the day concludes.
