Apple faces significant regulatory and geopolitical barriers to sourcing memory chips from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), a Chinese DRAM maker on the Pentagon blacklist, which explains the 72.5% market-implied odds against a 2026 purchase. Ongoing U.S.-China tensions, combined with congressional pressure to block any deal and the need for White House approval, have kept discussions limited to early testing of LPDDR5X components for devices sold only in China. The AI-driven memory shortage has prompted Apple’s lobbying and qualification efforts, yet capacity constraints at CXMT and national security concerns make broader adoption unlikely before year-end without unexpected policy shifts. Key catalysts include potential export control decisions and any formal supply agreements ahead of the 2026 iPhone cycle.
