Taiwan President Lai Ching-te faces an opposition-led impeachment effort in the legislature, with a recorded vote set for May 19, 2026, stemming from disputes over a funding bill and constitutional procedures. The motion requires a three-quarters majority that the opposition coalition currently lacks, making passage improbable under existing seat distributions. Lai, inaugurated in May 2024 for a term ending in 2028, continues active engagement in diplomacy, including a recent unannounced visit to Eswatini and his January 2026 New Year’s address emphasizing resilience. No significant health concerns, resignation signals, or other removal mechanisms have emerged. Traders assess these institutional and electoral barriers as sustaining his position through the end of 2026, aligning with the 87.5 percent implied probability against an early exit.
