Major catalysts shaping trader views on an operational AI data center in space by late 2027 include Starcloud’s November 2025 launch of an NVIDIA H100-equipped satellite that completed the first orbital large language model training in December, followed by its October 2026 multi-GPU Starcloud-2 target and $170 million Series A funding. SpaceX’s January 2026 FCC filing for up to one million orbital data center satellites, its post-merger xAI alignment, and recent NVIDIA hardware partnership have added momentum, while Google’s November 2025 Project Suncatcher research and Aetherflux’s Q1 2027 commercial node target signal broader lab and startup interest. Persistent barriers—radiation hardening, power delivery, inter-satellite links, FCC approvals, and launch environmental concerns—keep near-term full-scale deployment probabilities moderate despite these proofs of concept.
