The July 2026 structural failure at the former Pfizer headquarters during its office-to-residential conversion triggered a city criminal inquiry alongside the Department of Buildings probe, citing missing steel reinforcements on multiple columns that caused buckling. No charges have been filed in the ensuing weeks despite documented prior safety violations and engineer findings of omitted reinforcements. This timeline, combined with the focus on stabilization, third-party reviews, and civil liability among developers, contractors, and engineers, supports trader consensus favoring no criminal charges by year-end. Additional August inspections revealed further column issues without accelerating enforcement, while broader DOB sweeps found no systemic risks in similar projects. Resolution hinges on proving criminal negligence amid competing civil claims.
