Bo French holds a lead in the 2026 Texas Railroad Commissioner race due to strong Republican primary support and the state's longstanding GOP advantage in statewide contests, though recent controversy has narrowed trader expectations of a decisive victory. French defeated incumbent Jim Wright in the May runoff after emphasizing cultural issues alongside energy regulation, overcoming opposition from Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. Democrat Jon Rosenthal, a state representative and former oil-field engineer, has highlighted technical expertise on grid reliability and permitting but trails in fundraising and faces structural barriers in a Republican-leaning electorate. A September social media post by French drew swift Republican criticism for perceived racism, prompting some party figures to question his candidacy and boosting Rosenthal's recent small-dollar donations and visibility. Libertarian Arthur DiBianca remains a minor factor. High undecided shares in late-summer polling underscore uncertainty heading into November.
