The tournament structure in major knockout competitions like the World Cup or Euros makes three or more penalty shootouts for any single team highly improbable, as it requires advancing via shootouts across multiple rounds such as the round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals. Historical patterns show few teams reaching even two shootouts in one edition due to the physical and mental demands, combined with the limited number of knockout ties overall. Recent form from prior tournaments reinforces this, with most teams either winning in regulation or exiting early without repeated extra-time scenarios. Traders' 82% implied probability on "No" aligns with these matchup and scheduling dynamics that favor decisive results over repeated lotteries.

For the purpose of this market, the knockout phase consists of any game played after the group stage (Round of 32 onward, inclusive of the 3rd-place game). A penalty shootout is counted for both teams that participate in it. The three shootouts must be reached by the same team.
If the 2026 FIFA World Cup is cancelled, postponed after August 2, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or it cannot be determined whether any team participated in three or more shootouts within that timeframe, this market will resolve to “No”.
The resolution source for this market will be official information from FIFA; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
