Recent weakness in the Brazilian real, with USD/BRL trading near 5.22 in mid-August 2026 after rising over 2% in the past month, stems primarily from domestic political uncertainty ahead of elections and concerns over fiscal sustainability. Traders are pricing in higher risk premia as capital outflows accelerate and institutions reduce exposure. Brazil's central bank has continued easing the Selic rate, most recently cutting 25 basis points to 14%, narrowing the interest rate differential versus the Fed's steady policy stance and diminishing carry trade appeal. Commodity price support and Brazil's growth outlook provide some offset, but upcoming monetary policy meetings and election-related developments represent key catalysts that could drive further volatility in the pair through year-end.
