The Bank of Korea’s decision to hold its policy rate at the current 3.00% level in October reflects the central bank’s emphasis on evaluating the effects of its consecutive 25 basis point hikes in July and August, following inflation that reached 3.1% year-over-year in August and core readings of 3.4%. Robust semiconductor export growth has supported an upgraded 2026 GDP outlook near 3.3%, while household debt and housing market concerns reinforce a cautious stance. The recent Federal Reserve rate increase to the 3.75-4.00% range has widened the Korea-U.S. differential to 100 basis points, adding external pressure, though BOK communications stress gradual pacing and data-dependent timing rather than predetermined moves. Market-implied odds align with this wait-and-see approach ahead of the October meeting, with any further tightening more likely deferred to November or later.
