The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season remains exceptionally quiet through late August, with only three short-lived tropical storms and zero hurricanes or major systems recorded, yielding an accumulated cyclone energy total 86% below the 1991–2020 average. A strengthening El Niño has produced elevated vertical wind shear across the main development region, suppressing intensification despite near-normal sea-surface temperatures. NOAA’s August outlook assigns a 75% probability of below-normal activity overall, forecasting just 0–2 major hurricanes for the full season and sharply reduced odds of U.S. landfalls. With peak months still ahead but model consensus favoring continued suppression, traders assign an 83.5% implied probability that no Category 4 hurricane reaches the U.S. coastline before 2027.
