President Donald Trump launched Project Freedom in early May 2026 as a U.S. naval escort operation to protect commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz amid Iranian threats. The effort paused within days after Saudi Arabia and Kuwait restricted base and airspace access, prompting Trump to cite progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations mediated by Pakistan. Recent statements from the White House indicate Trump is weighing a restart, potentially under an expanded “Project Freedom Plus” mandate if talks stall. Pentagon officials have signaled escorts could resume this week once allied permissions are confirmed. Ongoing diplomatic exchanges with Tehran and regional partners remain the central variables shaping whether the operation resumes before key deadlines.
