Nicolás Maduro remains in U.S. federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn following his January 3, 2026 capture during a U.S. military operation in Caracas. He and his wife face narco-terrorism and drug trafficking charges stemming from a 2020 Southern District of New York indictment, to which both pleaded not guilty. A superseding indictment was unsealed upon his arrival, and he is held under special administrative measures with limited movement and 24-hour monitoring. Court proceedings have advanced to a scheduled trial in June 2027, with no bail granted and no public indications of plea negotiations or release. Recent statements from Maduro supporting Venezuelan opposition talks have not altered his detention status. Any resolution before late 2026 would require either a rare pretrial agreement, diplomatic intervention, or a shift in U.S. policy priorities amid ongoing Senate calls for Venezuelan elections and reconciliation talks.

If Nicolás Maduro is released but remains under house arrest, the market will still resolve to "Yes".
If Nicolás Maduro is released on parole, bond, or any other condition that results in them leaving state custody, the market will resolve to "Yes".
Transporting Nicolás Maduro to another location of custody (e.g., a different prison, court, or hospital within the correctional system) will not suffice to resolve this market to "Yes".
Temporary outings from prison for purposes such as testifying in court or before Congress, while still under the custody of correctional authorities, will not count as a release.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from government authorities or corrections departments; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
