Federal charges against the Southern Poverty Law Center for wire fraud, false statements to banks, and money laundering conspiracy stem from allegations that the organization used over $3 million in donor funds between 2014 and 2023 to pay informants inside extremist groups without disclosure. A federal grand jury returned the initial indictment in April 2026, followed by superseding indictments in June and August that added details and a former official as a defendant. The SPLC pleaded not guilty in July and moved to dismiss the case as vindictive prosecution. Trial is set for October 2026 in the Middle District of Alabama. Trader consensus at 56.5% for a guilty finding reflects the active prosecution and expanded charges alongside unresolved dismissal motions and standard burdens of proof in complex nonprofit fraud matters.
