The Bank of Korea’s August 27 back-to-back 25-basis-point hike to 3.00%—its first consecutive tightening since 2023—has anchored trader expectations for a pause at the October Monetary Policy Board meeting, reflected in the 71.5% implied probability of no change. Robust semiconductor-driven growth prompted an upward revision of the 2026 GDP forecast to 3.3%, while core inflation remains elevated at 2.5% and headline CPI is projected at 2.7%, above the 2% target. Governor Shin Hyun-song emphasized a gradual approach dependent on incoming data through October, including August-September inflation and Q2 nominal GDP, with the updated dot plot clustering around a 3.25% terminal rate by year-end. This data-dependent stance, combined with financial-stability considerations and a stronger won, supports the current pricing favoring stability before any further adjustment.
