California voters face a closely contested November 2026 decision on Proposition 42, which would amend the state constitution to bar new taxes after January 1, 2026, on retirement holdings, personal assets, savings, and certain retroactive measures tied to prior residency or conduct. Trader sentiment remains balanced because the measure was advanced specifically to neutralize the competing billionaire wealth tax initiative (Proposition 40) if it garners more votes, creating direct head-to-head dynamics over revenue needs versus asset protections. Recent polling shows divided support for the wealth tax itself, while broader voter attitudes toward tax increases, legal challenges to retroactivity, and turnout among higher-asset households versus public-service advocates keep implied probabilities near even. Upcoming campaign spending and any shifts in gubernatorial race messaging could alter the balance before election day.
