Nicolás Maduro faces a June 2027 trial in the Southern District of New York on four felony counts, including narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation conspiracy, following his January 2026 capture by U.S. forces and not-guilty plea. Defense counsel has signaled intent to file motions to dismiss on head-of-state immunity grounds and challenges tied to his removal from Venezuela, drawing on precedents like the Noriega case while emphasizing distinctions. The extended pretrial window through late 2026 permits additional filings, potential plea negotiations, or diplomatic shifts that could alter outcomes before a jury verdict. With no major developments reported since the trial date was set in July 2026, trader consensus reflected in the 71.5% "No" probability accounts for these procedural hurdles and the possibility of convictions on fewer than all counts.
