Nate Silver’s FLIPR model currently assigns Democrats a modest edge for Senate control, reflecting their generic ballot lead of roughly six points, favorable polling in battlegrounds, and the typical midterm penalty for the president’s party. Republicans enter with a 53-47 majority and must limit net losses to four seats or fewer, while Democrats need gains concentrated in competitive contests such as Texas (where Paxton faces Talarico), Ohio (Brown versus Husted), Maine, Michigan, and Iowa. Recent model updates through late August have kept Democratic chances near 57 percent, though other forecasters show Republicans narrowly favored. Fresh polling releases, candidate developments, and any shifts in the national environment could alter the projected tipping-point races and move the probability above or below 50 percent before November.
