Alex Michelsen faces Francisco Cerundolo in the second round of the 2026 National Bank Open on outdoor hard courts in Montreal. The higher-ranked Cerundolo enters with a bye and stronger 2026 results, including an ATP 500 title at Queen’s and consistent performances across surfaces that reflect his baseline consistency and experience in Masters events. Michelsen, a rising American ranked in the low 40s, brings recent hard-court momentum from North American swing matches but trails in overall win rate and Grand Slam depth this season. Their head-to-head is split on different surfaces, with Cerundolo’s prior indoor win contrasting Michelsen’s grass-court victory; the hard-court matchup favors the Argentine’s established movement and return game. No major injury concerns have surfaced for either player ahead of the August 5 start.
