Tommy Paul entered the 2026 Roland Garros first-round matchup as the clear favorite, seeded 24th and ranked far ahead of world No. 102 Rinky Hijikata, with traders citing his stronger baseline consistency and proven clay-court results. Paul arrived off a Hamburg final that sharpened his movement and endurance on the surface, while recent head-to-head patterns and ATP-level experience favored the American in longer rallies typical of clay. Hijikata showed solid challenger-level clay form earlier in the swing but lacked the depth to challenge a top-30 player consistently at a Grand Slam. Market pricing reflected this gap in overall form, physical readiness, and historical performance against similar opponents, with limited late variables such as weather or injuries expected to shift the implied probabilities.
