President Donald Trump launched Project Freedom on May 4 to guide commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz after Iran's blockade and the prior U.S. naval campaign against Iranian forces. The operation was paused within 48 hours at the request of Pakistan and other nations to allow progress toward a final peace agreement with Iran. The U.S. naval blockade remains in effect. As of mid-May, Trump has publicly stated he is weighing a restart, potentially with expanded scope, following Iran's rejection of the latest U.S. proposal. Ongoing bilateral talks and any further diplomatic signals from Tehran or Washington will determine whether the initiative resumes before scheduled resolution dates.
