The Department of Justice closed its criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on April 24, 2026, referring the matter involving headquarters renovation costs and congressional testimony to the Fed's inspector general. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro noted her office would restart a probe if facts justified it, a shift that followed court blocks on subpoenas and cleared a path for Senate consideration of President Trump's nominee Kevin Warsh to succeed Powell. Powell has stated he will stay until the review concludes with full transparency. Any inspector general findings or new evidence could prompt renewed Department of Justice action within the coming months.
