The S&P 500 has traded near record levels above 7,400 in mid-May 2026 after closing April at 7,209, supported by robust first-quarter earnings growth of 26-27% and accelerating AI-related capital spending from major technology firms. Strong retail sales and labor market data have reinforced the resilient economy, even as elevated energy prices and wholesale inflation readings near 6% annually introduce downside risks to margins and consumer sentiment. Market participants are watching the next CPI release and any Federal Reserve signals on the policy rate path, alongside continued earnings reports, for potential shifts in risk appetite that could influence closing levels through the end of the month.
