This market will resolve to “Yes” if the total number of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviews that cause a stoppage in play during the 2026 FIFA World Cup equals or exceeds the listed number. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. Only VAR reviews that cause a stoppage in play are counted. A review that does not stop play does not count. If the 2026 FIFA World Cup is shortened, truncated, or ends early for any reason, the outcome shall be determined using available official data for completed matches. If the 2026 FIFA World Cup is cancelled, postponed after August 2, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or the exact total cannot be determined within that timeframe, this market will resolve to “No”. The resolution source for this market will be official information from FIFA and official broadcast partners; however, a consensus of credible reporting (including Opta data) may also be used.Expanded VAR protocols for the 2026 World Cup represent the central factor shaping expectations around stoppage volume. IFAB has granted video officials new authority to review incorrectly awarded corners (provided no restart delay), clearly erroneous second yellow cards, mistaken identity on disciplinary actions, and certain pre-set-piece fouls, while deploying AI-assisted 3D tracking to accelerate offside decisions. These additions build on routine checks for goals, penalties, and red cards, increasing intervention opportunities across the expanded 48-team tournament. Historical data from 2018 and 2022 showed VAR reviews averaging several per match with limited on-field changes, yet the broader scope this summer could elevate total stoppages despite efforts to maintain game tempo through quicker substitution windows and time-wasting deterrents. Referee consistency and the sheer volume of set pieces in high-stakes matches will further influence outcomes.
