Recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including disruptions from the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran that have pushed oil prices toward $100 per barrel, have elevated euro area energy inflation to 10.0% and pushed headline inflation to 2.9% in July 2026 from 2.8% in June. These developments have prompted ECB President Christine Lagarde and other officials to signal upside risks to the inflation outlook, leading the Governing Council to adopt a more hawkish tone after keeping the deposit facility rate unchanged at 2.25% following its June 25-basis-point hike. Traders interpret the July 23 policy statement and subsequent commentary as strongly indicating another 25-basis-point increase at the September 9–10 meeting to address persistent price pressures above the 2% target, consistent with the current market pricing. Data-dependent guidance and volatile energy outlooks remain key variables that could still shift expectations ahead of the decision.
