Incumbent Rep. Darrell Issa's March 2026 retirement from the redrawn, Democratic-leaning CA-48 has opened a competitive nonpartisan top-two primary on June 2, drawing over nine Democratic candidates against Republican frontrunner San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, whom Issa endorsed. Late April Tulchin Research polling shows Desmond leading at 27%, ahead of Democrats Marni von Wilpert (16%) and Ammar Campa-Najjar (13%), with the crowded Democratic field risking vote-splitting that could advance two Republicans to November. Recent candidate forums and endorsements underscore ongoing Democratic infighting, while high early voting turnout could tip the balance in this swing district stretching from San Diego suburbs to Palm Springs.
