Recent surges in Japan’s 10-year JGB yield to 3.0–3.035% reflect sustained upward pressure from the Bank of Japan’s policy normalization, with markets pricing a near-term hike of the policy rate to 1.25% amid persistent inflation risks tied to elevated oil prices. Fiscal expansion under Prime Minister Takaichi, including potential tax cuts and higher defense outlays, has raised term-premium concerns and expectations of increased bond supply. Global factors, including U.S. Treasury yields above 5% and Fed tightening signals, have reinforced the repricing. With the yield already near the 3.0% threshold and limited time remaining before year-end, trader consensus assigns the highest implied probability to outcomes at or above that level, while acknowledging scope for modest volatility around upcoming BOJ communications and energy-price developments.
