California's 48th Congressional District top-two primary on June 2 pits a crowded field against each other for two spots in the November general election, following Rep. Darrell Issa's March retirement announcement and redistricting that shifted the San Diego-Riverside battleground toward Democrats. Recent Tulchin Research polling (late April) shows Republican Jim Desmond leading at 27% with endorsements from Issa and Trump, while Democrats Marni von Wilpert (16%), Ammar Campa-Najjar (13%), and Brandon Riker (8%) split votes amid reported infighting. ABC 10News/SurveyUSA polls confirm Desmond's edge in the fragmented race. Mail ballots began arriving May 4, with candidate forums amplifying turnout focus as traders weigh Democratic consolidation risks.
