The special election to fill Georgia’s 13th congressional seat, vacant after Democratic incumbent David Scott’s death in April 2026, featured six candidates on a combined July 28 ballot under state rules allowing an outright win with a majority. Traders priced a high likelihood of such a result because the district’s strong Democratic lean favored rapid consolidation behind one of the four Democratic contenders, particularly those with name recognition or institutional support, while the two Republicans were expected to split a small share. Recent primary and special-election patterns in similar Georgia districts reinforced expectations that a single frontrunner would clear 50 percent. The August 25 runoff between the top two Democrats now proceeds because no candidate achieved that threshold, illustrating how vote fragmentation among co-partisans can still force a second round despite the district’s partisan makeup.
