Giorgia Meloni remains the leading contender in trader assessments for Italy’s next prime minister, supported by her coalition’s parliamentary majority and decision to continue governing after the March 2026 judicial reform referendum defeat. That loss, which opposition parties framed as a verdict on her leadership, has opened space for center-left figures such as Silvia Salis, positioned by some as a moderate alternative, and Elly Schlein of the Democratic Party. Angelo Bonelli and Giuseppe Conte also draw support amid speculation about possible early elections or coalition realignments before the scheduled 2027 vote. Meloni’s government has now become the second-longest serving in the postwar republic, underscoring the stability that continues to underpin her odds despite the referendum setback.
