President Donald Trump launched Project Freedom on May 4, 2026, as a U.S. military escort operation to guide merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz following the 2026 Iran war and Iranian naval actions. The initiative was paused within 48 hours after requests from Pakistan and other nations, citing progress in bilateral peace negotiations with Iranian representatives aimed at a final agreement within 30 days. Saudi Arabia’s refusal to grant access to its Prince Sultan airbase and airspace further contributed to the decision to maintain the existing naval blockade while halting active escorts. Ongoing diplomatic talks, potential ceasefire terms, and any shifts in regional military posture remain the primary factors that could prompt a restart before key resolution deadlines.
