Recent nominations and candidate hearings have kept the contest for UN Secretary-General tightly balanced among experienced diplomats. Rafael Grossi’s established profile as IAEA director general has given him a modest edge in trader assessments, while Maria Fernanda Espinosa’s formal entry in mid-May by Antigua and Barbuda quickly elevated her standing. Rebeca Grynspan and Michelle Bachelet remain competitive through their UNCTAD and human-rights leadership records, respectively. Regional rotation expectations, the preference for a first woman in the role, and the need for Security Council consensus continue to prevent any single contender from consolidating broad support ahead of the formal selection process later this year.
