Recent Fed communications and surging expectations for rate hikes in late 2026—driven by persistent inflation pressures from energy prices and Middle East developments—have weighed on gold, which trades near or below the $4,000 per ounce level after testing higher earlier in the summer. Markets now price multiple hikes by year-end versus earlier cut expectations, supporting a firmer dollar and higher Treasury yields that historically cap precious metals gains. Key upcoming catalysts include August inflation data, labor market releases, and any additional FOMC member remarks that could shift implied rate paths ahead of the week of August 10. Trader positioning reflects caution around these macro drivers rather than strong directional conviction.
