Recent Bank of Japan communications and July summary of opinions have driven the 73% market-implied odds for a 25 basis point hike at the September 17-18 meeting, highlighting upside inflation risks as underlying CPI approaches the 2% target amid energy price pressures and resilient domestic demand. After lifting the policy rate to 1.0% in June—its highest since 1995—the board left rates unchanged in July while trimming its FY2026 inflation forecast slightly and signaling readiness for gradual normalization. Traders price the outcome against supportive financial conditions and yen weakness, with Reuters sources noting consideration of an accelerated tightening pace thereafter. The September decision remains the key near-term catalyst, as markets weigh incoming data on wages, prices, and global factors against the board’s balanced risk assessment.
