Thorsten Kornblum, the SPD incumbent Oberbürgermeister since 2021, secured 43.3 percent in the September 13 first round, advancing to the September 27 runoff against CDU challenger Maximilian Pohler (17.2 percent) with a 26-point margin. This performance, backed by SPD strength in the concurrent council vote and Kornblum’s prior record on local priorities such as education, public safety, and economic development, underpins trader consensus for his re-election. Other candidates, including the Greens and AfD, trailed further and will not appear on the runoff ballot. A reversal would require an unusually sharp swing in second-round preferences or turnout patterns that have not materialized in comparable German municipal runoffs.
