Gold (XAUUSD) tumbled over 4% during the week of May 11, trading around $4,550 per ounce as of May 15 after opening near $4,730, primarily pressured by hotter-than-expected April CPI (3.8% year-over-year) on May 12 and PPI data on May 13. These inflation readings bolstered the U.S. dollar index and pushed 10-year Treasury yields higher, curtailing Federal Reserve rate cut expectations and eroding appeal for the non-yielding safe-haven asset amid elevated real yields. Trader consensus reflects caution on near-term upside, with the market pricing in persistent inflationary pressures despite central bank gold buying trends; resolution hinges on Friday's close, ahead of next week's retail sales release influencing monetary policy outlooks.
