Japan’s 10-year government bond yield, currently near 2.98–3.0%, trades close to 30-year highs amid the Bank of Japan’s September 18 decision to raise its policy rate 25 basis points to 1.25%, the highest level since 1995. Persistent price pressures, with headline inflation at 1.9% and core measures near 1.7–1.9% in August, alongside wage pass-through and elevated oil prices, support further tightening expectations. The split 7-2 vote and external pressure from U.S. officials reinforce trader views that the yield curve will remain elevated through year-end. Market-implied odds heavily favor a 3.0%+ close, reflecting the pace of normalization and limited scope for rapid disinflation before December 31.
