The Iranian rial's depreciation against the USD, reaching approximately 1.81 million IRR per dollar on open markets as of May 15, stems primarily from intensified U.S. sanctions announced on May 11 targeting Iran's oil operations and Revolutionary Guard-linked entities, exacerbating economic strain from the 2026 U.S.-Iran conflict and lingering Strait of Hormuz disruptions. Hyperinflation exceeding 60%, restricted oil exports, and subsidy shortfalls have fueled black-market volatility, with the rate peaking near 1.93 million earlier this month. Fragile ceasefire talks, described by President Trump as on "life support," and potential nuclear negotiations through late May introduce uncertainty, as progress could ease pressures while escalations risk further plunges; traders monitor daily rates from sources like AlanChand for resolution by May 31.
