Incumbent Republican Mike Lawler faces Democratic challenger Cait Conley in New York’s 17th congressional district, a Hudson Valley swing seat that voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race. Lawler advanced unopposed through the June 23 Republican primary after winning reelection by a narrow margin in 2024, while Conley prevailed in a crowded Democratic primary. Recent polling shows a tight contest with small leads for either candidate depending on the survey, though prediction-market pricing reflects broader midterm dynamics favoring the opposition party and trader assessment of Conley’s profile as a West Point graduate and national-security veteran. The race remains one of the more competitive House contests heading into November, with outcomes sensitive to turnout, national political conditions, and any late shifts in voter preference.
