Gold prices, trading near $4,340 per ounce in early August 2026 after a 7% weekly surge driven by soft July nonfarm payrolls, reflect trader focus on the Federal Reserve’s policy path amid persistent inflation concerns. The July FOMC hold at 3.50–3.75% and subsequent hawkish signals have kept markets pricing in potential rate hikes later in the year, supporting real yields that cap gold’s upside despite its safe-haven appeal. Key near-term catalysts include the July CPI release on August 12 and follow-on PPI and retail sales data, which will shape expectations for September FOMC positioning. Recent consolidation above yearly lows near $4,170, alongside mixed geopolitical signals in energy markets, leaves XAU/USD sensitive to any downside surprises in inflation or labor metrics that could ease tightening bets and lift implied probabilities for near-term gains.
