Jelena Ostapenko enters the National Bank Open second round with a first-round bye as the 26th seed, while wild card Shuai Zhang must win her opener against a qualifier or direct entry. Ostapenko holds a 2-0 head-to-head edge, including a dominant 6-2, 6-1 hard-court victory at Indian Wells in 2019. Both players compete on outdoor hard courts in Toronto, where Ostapenko maintains a stronger recent win rate against top-100 opponents and higher ace production. Zhang’s ranking outside the top 60 and limited recent WTA-level success position her as the clear underdog, with market pricing reflecting Ostapenko’s superior serve, aggressive baseline game, and overall experience in high-stakes matches. No significant injuries or withdrawals have altered the field.
