The Bank of Canada’s steady 2.25% policy rate, unchanged through six consecutive decisions as of the July 15, 2026 announcement, underpins the 89.7% implied probability of no change at the October 28 meeting. Recent CPI prints near 2.8% reflect temporary energy-price effects with limited pass-through to core measures around 2%, while GDP growth remains sub-trend yet shows modest broadening and unemployment hovers near 6.6%. Forward curves, economist surveys, and bank forecasts from TD and National Bank price only modest upside risks from persistent inflation or downside growth vulnerabilities, aligning trader capital with a wait-and-see stance through year-end. Key near-term catalysts include the September 2 decision plus August CPI and labor data that could shift the modest probabilities attached to a 25-basis-point move.

Increases or decreases of less than 25 bps will be rounded to 25 bps (e.g. an increase or decrease of 10 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 25 bps). Increases or decreases of greater than 25 bps will be rounded to the nearest 25 bps and will be rounded away from 0 in cases of equidistance (e.g., an increase or decrease of 37.5 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 50 bps). Displayed options of “Increase” or “Decrease” will include policy rate increases or decreases of any size.
