South Korea's equity market, heavily weighted toward semiconductor leaders Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix that comprise roughly 42% of the EWY index, has driven extreme volatility in the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF amid shifting AI memory demand. After surging to a 52-week high near $218 in early June 2026 on robust HBM chip export growth, EWY experienced a sharp 14% single-day decline on June 5 triggered by Broadcom's tempered AI revenue outlook and stronger-than-expected U.S. payroll data that lifted rate-cut skepticism. The won's ongoing depreciation added further pressure on dollar-denominated returns, while Korean GDP is projected to expand 2.5% for the year supported by semiconductor momentum. Traders are monitoring upcoming global tech earnings and any Bank of Korea policy signals for near-term resolution cues.
