South Korea ETF (EWY) has surged on record semiconductor export growth tied to the global AI boom, with KOSPI climbing above 6,800 amid 100%+ YTD gains led by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. EWY itself shows roughly 82-84% year-to-date returns as of mid-August 2026, trading near $180 with heavy inflows exceeding $1.2 billion recently. Trader sentiment reflects strong chip demand, revised GDP forecasts near 3%, and Bank of Korea policy holding the base rate at 2.75%, though recent volatility from deleveraging episodes and currency swings in the won remain key variables. The week of August 17 may hinge on fresh export and industrial data, U.S. equity moves, and any Fed or BOK signals on rates.
