Japan’s 10-year government bond yield, recently trading near 2.98% after briefly touching 3% in early September, reflects the Bank of Japan’s accelerated policy normalization. The central bank’s September 18 rate hike to 1.25%—its highest level since 1995—along with Governor Ueda’s comments on preemptive action against upside inflation risks, has reinforced trader expectations for additional tightening through year-end. Persistent wage-price dynamics, elevated producer prices, fiscal spending pressures from record budget requests, and a weak yen continue to support higher long-term yields. Market-implied odds heavily favor levels at or above 3% by December 2026, consistent with the trajectory of monetary policy adjustment and inflation data releases expected in the coming months.
